Converting eastings and northings for bus stops

Published: 08/05/2024

We understand that all Local Authorities are delivering Eastings and Northings to the correct precision (1m x 1m).

We suggest that the best point to measure a bus stop was where someone needs to stand to catch a bus - focus on the passenger experience.

Ordnance Survey have a page on how to do the conversion from Eastings/Northings to Latitude/Longitude (OSGB36 to WGS84) calculation: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-government/tools-support/os-net/coordinates

We recommend that the data consumers of NaPTAN data calculate conversions using the Ordnance Survey methodology.

The previous NaPTAN did do a centrally managed conversion. However, this caused issues by overwriting data provided by local transport authorities, and in some cases not performing the conversion to the right precision.

We are working with Local Authorities who are providing converted Latitude/Longitude coordinates to ensure the methods they are using are producing results which are accurate.
